2 cd set faturing Steve playing with various friends including bandmates Bob Driver and Neil Knicely, Jane Rothfield, John Glick, Allan Carr, Dan Rublee, Jim Gaskins and Gene Bowlen. Steve approached me near the end of his 20+ battle with cancer and asked if I could record him playing with a bunch of his friends while he still had the strength. Over the course of nearly a year we had 2 major recording sessions with his band, Driver Parks Knicely, weekend sessions with Jane Rothfield and again with John Glick and a fun-filled jam session at Steve’s house with Jane, her husband Allan, Dan Rublee – I recorded the session and played banjo on several tunes. Steve died about 4 months after the last recording session when we had mixed everything and were working through the mastering process.
Sandy, Steve’s wife, struggled for some time about what to do with the project. When another friend in the local music scene was diagnosed with cancer Sandy knew what to do. She came to me and asked m to finish the mastering because we were going to release the cd set as a fundraiser to help provide financial assistance to fellow musicians who have life threatening medical issues. So far, we have paid for all of the cd production costs for duplication and packaging and have some positive cash flow. Many thanks to all of the musicians who gladly donated their time to play with Steve. I think I speak for them when I say – the honor of sharing the joy of making music with Steve was a priceless gift to each of us.
